These composite images feature antique cabinet cards–or their smaller variants known as cartes de visite. Portraits of this type were popular from the mid 19th through the early 20th century. I’ve collected many such cards, a few of which date back to the 1860s. Some of them have beautiful engravings on the back that give information about the photographer’s studio. In a few of the images shown here, I’ve superimposed elements from the reverse side onto the portrait, often with surprising results. In other cases, I’ve added elements from my own photographs or written materials. I like giving the photographs and their subjects a new look–and a new audience–more than a century after the original portraits were made.
